Hornby trustees seek TELUS alternative before tower decision

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to ask TELUS whether it would commit to installing a remote switching unit on Hornby Island as an alternative to the proposed micro tower installation. The motion carried on March 31. [1]
Planner Marnie Eggen reported that the consultation package for the TELUS antenna siting proposal had been received and that a staff report would be prepared for the committee’s consideration of concurrence or non-concurrence. [1]
The committee considered the possibility of a special meeting or an early start at its next regular meeting, and reviewed options for presenting public comments. [1]
At the meeting’s Town Hall, comments included requests for more time for community consultation and research into alternatives, including fibre optic cables or other systems. Supporters said a lack of cell coverage affected emergency services and that failure of the existing cable would leave many residents vulnerable. [1]
The committee set its next meeting for May 5, 2017, at 10:30 am at New Horizons, 1765 Sollans Road, Hornby Island. [1]
