Hornby trustees endorse two-option First Nation relationship project
The proposal will go forward as a business case for budget consideration, with staff targeting an October 18 committee meeting.

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee endorsed a First Nation Relationship Building major project that includes both an option to initiate and continue relationship-building and an option to explore a Friendship Accord, memorandum of understanding or protocol agreement with K’ómoks First Nation. [1]
Regional Planning Manager Renée Jamurat said the next step was to draft a business case and bring it to the Financial Planning Committee’s budget deliberations on October 18, 2023. [2]
The minutes record that the budget estimate could range from $5000 to $12,000 and could include capacity funding for First Nations engagement. [1]
During the meeting, Jamurat said the work would begin with relationship-building and that any further arrangement would depend on how conversations unfolded. [2]
Trustee Alex Allen said the committee should determine how K’ómoks First Nation wished to be engaged, and identified improving the referral process, education and stewardship regarding cultural heritage sites, and First Nations place names as areas for discussion. [2]
The meeting was held electronically on September 29, 2023, and adjourned at 9:31 pm, according to the adopted minutes. [1]
