Hornby trustees change permit referrals to include K’ómoks First Nation
Staff said all permits received on Hornby and Denman islands would be sent to K’ómoks First Nation for comment after trustees discussed reconciliation and land-use applications.

All permits received on Hornby and Denman islands were to be sent to K’ómoks First Nation for comment under a new staff process discussed by the Hornby Island Local Trust Committee on March 26, 2021. [1]
Regional Planning Manager Heather Kauer said staff would send every permit directly to K’ómoks First Nation, which would review them to determine whether its permitting process was triggered. [2]
The minutes say the change followed an LTC resolution and that staff would forward permit applications to K’ómoks First Nation for review. [1]
The committee also discussed the discovery of human remains associated with K’ómoks First Nation at the site of the Thatch development and how to move forward with Hornby land-use matters and regulations relating to First Nations. [1]
Trustee Grant Scott said the committee would need to consider how future development permit applications near possible middens would be handled, while Chair Sue Ellen Fast recorded the question of what would be said to applicants. [2]
The minutes record that Regional Planning Manager Kauer had contacted K’ómoks First Nation staff about improving interaction on applications and referrals, and that staff hoped to reach out to Chief Rempel and K’ómoks Council members. [1]
