Hornby trustees ask staff to review vacation-home rentals

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to research options for addressing vacation-home rentals under Official Community Plan policies, including education and advocacy on water use and waste disposal, possible enforcement approaches for existing regulations, and adjustments where regulations have not been administratively effective. The request followed a community survey that received 241 responses and a question-and-answer session at the December 1 meeting. [1]
Members of the public raised points including a shortage of vacation-home rentals, occupancy levels that were sometimes too high, and concerns about the relationship between vacation-home rentals and long-term rental shortages. [1]
Trustees said they did not want to impede vacation-home rentals and wanted to review the practice. They also said stopping vacation-home rentals would not increase the availability of affordable housing. [1]
Chair Laura Busheikin said rules around vacation-home rentals would contribute to their acceptance as a well-run business sector, and noted that extra regulations might not be worthwhile except for requiring or encouraging water catchment at vacation-home-rental sites. [1]
