Hornby trustees ask for exclusion from Spartina pesticide permit
The Local Trust Committee cited manual removal, proposed monitoring and community concerns about the herbicide in its response.

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to respond to a pesticide-use referral by requesting that Hornby Island be excluded from Permit Application Number 15460-07/PUP-MOE-16-19. [1]
The committee’s motion said the low occurrence of Spartina spp. identified through an island survey had been removed manually by a registered professional biologist, who also surveyed the entire shoreline and confirmed no further instances of the invasive species. [1]
The motion also cited proposed ongoing monitoring for possible reoccurrence and concerns from community members about the herbicide that would be used. [1]
The minutes say the committee had been told Hornby Island’s three small sites of Spartina had been manually removed and that discussions were being held to establish follow-up monitoring. [1] The motion carried. [1]
