Hornby trustees approve review of vacation home rental rules

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee approved a revised project charter for reviewing vacation home rental policies and regulations, with community consultation and a staff assessment of administrative, permitting and enforcement issues planned for fall or winter 2017.[1]
The committee added a deliverable requiring staff to assess best practices and potential additional tools, and changed the project purpose to identify improved approaches through education, regulation and enforcement.[1]
Trustees discussed distributing a community survey through mail drops, strategic locations, posters, social media, radio announcements and the webpage; survey responses will be provided to the committee to determine next steps.[1]
The discussion included concerns about overloading allowable occupancy and a review of water and septic requirements, including possible changes for small lots.[1]
The committee approved an allocation of $500.00 from its Special Projects Budget for the review.[1]
