Hornby trustees add groundwater protection to top priorities

The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee added Groundwater Protection and Water Conservation to its Top Priorities List and asked staff to prepare a work plan and budget for the priority. [1]
The requested work plan is to include consolidation of existing information, research to address key knowledge gaps and recommendations for next steps. [1]
Senior Freshwater Specialist William Shulba told the committee that a three-dimensional hydrogeological model of Hornby Island had been created and well capture zones completed, which could support detailed analysis. [1]
The committee also heard that investigating recommendations from a 2002 groundwater geochemistry study prepared for the Islands Trust had been suggested. [1]
The decision followed a presentation on the Hornby Water Plan, created with the Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation; the presentation noted that detailed mapping of surficial deposits for incorporation into the hydrogeological model had received minimal attention. [1]
