The Hornby Island Local Trust Committee asked staff to discuss possible amendments to proposed Bylaw 141 with the resort rezoning applicant and, if they agree, draft changes for the committee to consider as early as possible.[1]

The proposed changes would make residential and commercial occupancy secondary to pub use and specify a pub capacity in line with the development proposal as originally stated.[1]

The discussion followed staff’s explanation that new information received after the public hearing could mean the bylaw would need another hearing; staff said proper process was required because a trustee had been influenced by new information.[1]

The applicant said a reconfigured on-site parking plan could support a pub capacity of 60 seats, and expressed concern about timelines and the possibility of another public hearing.[1]

The committee’s resolution carried. Trustee Law said the public had supported the proposal believing it would save the pub, and that safeguards were important to ensure community expectations were realized.[1]
